There is no known cure for Rosacea, however we at the Pulse Light Clinic direct our attention to accomplish a remission, this is our goal: few or no flushing episodes, paler/clearer complexion, and an absence of visible facial blood vessels.
It is now widely accepted that IPL is a very effective treatment for Rosacea, with study after study revealing similar statistics. The most famous study carried out by Schroeter CA et. al in 2005 concluded an average of 77.8% clearance of rosacea lesions with minimal side effects, and that these results were maintained at follow-up which averaged around four and a half years. There are various smaller studies following this one, with similar conclusions, which we are sure the Rosacea sufferer, in their quest for data about their condition, may already be familiar with.
IPL is now accepted as a proven technology for various skin and vascular issues and there is clearly no question that IPL has a profound and positive effect on redness, flushing, and the vascular lesions associated with Rosacea. During research for this article, just a few people online were discovered to be unimpressed by their IPL therapy, which on further examination, closely correlates with the experience of the therapist. Lisa Borg, Pulse Light Clinic’s Nutritional Therapist, studied 50 of her cases who have a diagnosis of Rosacea, and provided the statistics in the following table of her findings:

Stomach Acid98% – closely corresponds with the amount of people showing mineral imbalances (see later in this table). Stomach acid liberates minerals from foods and this unbound ionic form is the only way we can absorb and subsequently utilize them.
Constipated58% had slow moving bowels which results in auto-intoxication, weight gain (more calories are absorbed form the stool while it sits in the colon) and subsequent free radical damage.
Food Intolerance (involving IgG antibodies)80% had more than 4 symptoms of food sensitivity problems; only 12% of this group were laboratory tested and 100% of those tested had the most severe reaction to yeast, 100% had a severe reaction to cow’s milk, 75% had a moderate reaction to gluten. Other foods with mild-moderate reactions were found, but were different for each individual.
History of Antibiotic Use74% had an extensive history of antibiotic use. Anti means ‘against’ and biotic means ‘life’: antibiotics destroy live beneficial bacteria in the digestive system which makes way for the proliferation of digestive yeasts such as candida (closely correlates with Food Intolerance results). As you can see below, there is a high risk of developing candida overgrowth following antibiotic use, but some individuals escaped this phenomena (9%), which supports the use of preventative measures while using antibiotics.

When sugar is ingested and this system is non-optimum a vicious cycle ensues of high and low blood sugar, inflammation, and stress which for those with Rosacea only exacerbates their condition (see next).

Self-consciousness98% of people in the study encounter daily Rosacea flushing, whereas 2% do not flush but have persistent redness. 78% indicated that one or more of these factors (stress/worry etc.) caused a Rosacea flushing episode. Interestingly, chronic stress depletes mineral levels (higher demand) and contributes to blood glucose imbalance which instigates the stress reaction and so an increase in inflammation, this is a vicious cycle occurring on a cellular level.

Answer: All the available scientific research data on how light affects blood vessels, both on the surface of the skin, and with the application of the correct wavelength, eradication of the vessels under the surface of the skin.
2.What is the average number of IPL treatments required to get Rosacea well controlled?
Answer: 6 treatments
3.Is there any relevance to the number of treatments required in relation to the number of years the person has had Rosacea.
Answer: The condition is obviously worse the longer the person has had time to develop veins. A few broken veins on top of the usual flush is easier to handle within the 6 treatments than a face full of a well developed venous network, where a ?rogue? network underlying the superficial veins, has also had time to develop.
4.Are a high percentage of people coming for IPL to treat Rosacea doing so because their Rosacea has worsened in the previous 6 months or are there just as many who are recently diagnosed?
Answer: Most come following an acceleration of the condition.
5.What does the IPL therapist notice is different about clients who are or have followed a nutritional balancing programme in conjunction with IPL, as compared to those who have not?
Answer: Reduction of flushing after an average of 3 IPL treatments
6.In light of the above, would you advise clients to get onto a nutritional balancing programme before reaching the mid-way point of their 6 IPL sessions to favour a faster outcome?

7.What type of person (attitude) has the greatest and swiftest response to IPL therapy?
Answer: Those who can see that the condition is within their control.
8 How many people on record have the clinic seen that are now ‘Rosacea-free’
Answer: As you know the medical profession do not accept that a person can be Rosacea free, only symptom reduced. Monitoring the clients who underwent accompanying nutritional support in conjunction with IPL is without doubt the most successful outcome, but to give an accurate statistic on this would require follow up on those who completed both treatments.
8.What kind of Nutritional Balancing programme does an individual need to follow to support their IPL treatment?
Answer: Each individual is assessed on current symptoms, including their Rosacea and what triggers flushing, and a programme is developed in accordance with the Nutritional Therapist’s findings.
9.How is the assessment performed?
Answer: initially two questionnaires are completed online, one is a Full Questionnaire that assesses all bodily systems, the other is a Digestive Questionnaire which looks at all factors of digestion which is commonly the most problematic system in those with Rosacea. Once the responses are analysed, the client may be asked further questions, or requested to carry out a simple home test or two to check a suspected problem (such as low stomach acid). In some cases laboratory testing is advised where there are significant symptoms to suggest further investigation is necessary. Then, when the Nutritional Therapist has a clear picture of the client’s personal health profile, she can tell them more precisely what programme of address she recommends and outline the costs involved. At this point they can decide to go ahead or not.
10.How long is the programme for?
Answer: it really depends on what needs to be addressed. In most cases a 6-8 week programme is followed and the person continues to get IPL, the earlier the person starts this programme the better. In other cases, clinical tests are undertaken such as Food Intolerance testing (blood), urine or stool sampling or Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis. This would be in cases where there were obvious signs and symptoms to suggest an underlying contributing factor that would hinder the more usual 6-8 week programme.
11.What does it involve?
Answer: for the majority of people, it is simply dietary changes (excluding some foods while introducing healthier options), a supporting supplement prescription, digestive address and a specific herbal tea therapy; this is what we have seen the best outcomes with.
Conclusion
Rosacea is a stressful condition to have, and it is not just a skin problem but rather a collection of underlying issues. Traditional treatment for Rosacea with the long term use of antibiotics can lead to poor digestive function, small intestine bacterial overgrowth, candida infection, mineral deficiencies/imbalances, food intolerances involving the immune system and blood glucose problems. All of these are perceived as stress within the body, and stimulate the stress reaction which further depletes the ability to handle stress.
