House Concert With Jonathan Byrd

House Concert With Jonathan Byrd and Dan Weber

Jonathan Byrd has been stirring up the music scene since 2001. He won the prestigious New Folk competition in Kerrville, TX soon after the release of The Waitress. His newest release Cackalack, pays tribute to his home state of North Carolina and is full of his best music yet. His music draws from folk, honky tonk, bluegrass and the blues. His songs are about people we know and care about and his choruses are the kind you can’t help but sing along to. You can check him out at youtube.com/jonathanbyrd He is stopping by in Seattle for 1 night only and I have the honor of hosting him at my house.

Here is what other people have to say about Jonathan Byrd:

“This rootsy North Carolinian may be the most buzzed-about new songwriter in folkdom. He displays John Prine’s gift for stark little songs that tell big, complex stories, Guy Clark’s lean melodicism, Lyle Lovett’s wry mischief, and Bill Morrissey’s knack for the revealing image.” Scott Alarik in the Boston Globe

Starting A Lawn Mowing

Starting a Lawn Mowing Business – Pricing a Lawn

You’ve just set up a new lawn mowing business and a prospective customer has called you around to their property to quote on a price for mowing their lawn. Pricing a mowing job is one of the most important aspects of the lawn care business yet it can take time and knowledge before you can get your pricing right.

Start by walking the property at a leisurely pace to get a true impression of its size and contour. Try to visualize yourself on the job, getting your equipment from your truck to the lawn and back, mowing the lawn and getting around any obstacles.

The next step is to mentally calculate the time that it would take an average worker to complete the lawn.

Many lawn care operators then quote at a rate of $ 1 per minute to achieve an average rate of $ 60 an hour. Quoting at a rate of $ 1 per minute is seen by lawn care professionals in the US as a healthy and profitable rate to charge however it will vary depending on the state or city.

You may have to alter the per-minute rate to anywhere between 60 cents and $ 1.20 depending on market conditions in your area.

Whatever you do don’t let your customer know that you are pricing a lawn by the hour. If you have said that it will take you fifty minutes to finish and they then catch you leaving after 30 minutes they may insist on a lower price.

As pricing is one of the main ways that you can position yourself in the market as being different from your competitors many new businesses feel that the best way to become established is to undercut all the other industry players in price. Don’t be scared to ask for the full market value for your services as price-cutting is negative for the industry overall. If you start off pricing at a level that is hard to make a decent profit you will have trouble putting prices up at a later date to a level where you can make a decent living. And when you do finally get your prices up then someone else will end up undercutting you (possible one of your employees).

It is much better to try to compete on the quality of your services than it is to compete on price.

Quite often the customers that are constantly looking for low prices are the worst kind anyway and won’t be loyal to you like customers that appreciate your service for its other positive aspects.

Being able to come out with a price reflecting a premium service that is higher than market value can take experience, confidence and salesmanship. It helps here if you can demonstrate a superior knowledge of your customer’s lawns and prove to them why your services come at a premium. Having a respected brand is a huge advantage so your ability to call a premium price will increase over time as you become more established.

Take along a photo album with ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures of jobs that you have done to help to sell the customer on your services. This is also a great opportunity to up-sell other services, as the customers will see the full range of services that you offer in the photos.

As some lawn jobs will be very small yet still involve your travel and loading time it is important to have a minimum rate.

Pricing a lawn job is a real art that requires careful consideration of many factors and lots of testing over time.

At his site StartaLawnMowingBusiness.com Steve Sutherland has reviewed three of the top info products that can give you the guidance that you need to start a lawn mowing business the right way.

How To Keep Sheep

How to Keep Sheep

Breeds of Sheep

There are over 200 different breeds of sheep, and not all will be available in your area, so when selecting a breed find out what purpose you want your sheep to serve (meat, pasture control, wool) and determine from the available breeds in your area what breed best meets your purposes. Some of the more common sheep are the Dorset, Suffolk, and the Katahdin, which is a hairsheep breed best used for pasture control and meat production rather than wool.

How to Care for Sheep

Sheep generally do not require a lot of special care while on pasture. They will roam freely and graze on their own. You need to make sure they have fresh water, a salt lick, and mineral block. If you keep other animals you must note that sheep cannot have copper as copper is toxic to sheep.

Question by horsey_girl009: Pasture…?
Pasture?..?
do you have a plan for a mustang corral? i might get one but i need to beald the corral. did you have a drawn plain you could give me so i could bild the corral.

Best answer:

Answer by dorim_99
You can buy corral panels at any farm store. That will be the easiest way to go. They will likely be tall enough and you can buy one with a bow gate so you don’t have to mess around with fence posts. You can make it bigger by adding panels, you can make it different shapes from round, to oval, to square and rectangle. Best of all, if you move you can take it with you. You can sell it if you decide you don’t want horses after all.

I’ve always thought this little pasture–just a small corner on a big farm which is mostly devoted to wheat, corn, and beans–was the prettiest place on my route to work.

A Life Transformed Albany Crossfit

Albany, NY (PRWEB) May 11, 2012

Albany CrossFit and Crossfit Clifton Park, part of a worldwide movement that is changing the way people think about diet and fitness, today announced that its Paleo diet challenge has been been won by Katie Hunter, a 33-year-old mom and special education teacher who calls her experience ?life-changing.?

?This really got me out of my shell. I now know what I can do if I try,? says Hunter. ?It was definitely a confidence booster. People now come to me for diet advice. I never thought that would happen.?

Hunter now encourages others and posts inspirational quotes on her Facebook page. She is even considering a career change: becoming a fitness or nutrition coach once her 11-year-old son is a little older.

Hunter lost 20 pounds during the 90 day Paleo Challenge, on top of the 35 pounds she?d previously lost. At 185 pounds, Hunter says she still has 20-30 pounds to lose.

?I may not be there yet, but I?m getting better all the time,? says Hunter. She knows she can make it, thanks to the supportive environment at Albany CrossFit and CrossFit Clifton Park. ?It?s the community that makes the difference,? she says.

Jason Ackerman, owner of Albany CrossFit and CrossFit Clifton Park, agrees. ?We suspected we were on to something when over 120 of our members signed up for the challenge, but we were completely blown away by the results. Our members banded together to form a remarkable support system. Katie Hunter?s success story is just one of many.?

Hunter cites another factor. ?It really helped that my Albany CrossFit Coach, Jason Murphy, had been through a similar transformation,? she said, describing the coach known as Murph as ?frickin? awesome.?

Hunter had previously been a member at a conventional gym. She worked with a personal trainer and was in the gym almost every day, but showed little improvement because her diet was still so poor.

Albany CrossFit Paleo Challenge participants recorded improvements in diet, athletic performance and body composition and blogged about their experiences. They took before and after pictures and tracked improvements in benchmark workouts including: Deadlifts (1 rep max); a 2000 meter row; and a short circuit-based workout.

As the winner, Hunter will receive a free one-year membership.

?But this is not really about winning or losing a competition,” said Caleb Nelson, another coach at Albany CrossFit. ?That?s not what drove everyone. It?s really about becoming your best self. Our participants ended up happier and healthier. That?s the real win.?

The Albany CrossFit gym began modestly four years ago in cramped and shared space with a handful of members. It expanded to a second location in Clifton Park last summer, then expanded its original location. Together, both gyms have over 500 members.

Why the success for a demanding diet and workout regimen?

“It’s the community feeling and the caring,” says Albany CrossFit and CrossFit Clifton Park owner Jason Ackerman. “We treat everyone who walks through the door like an athlete, regardless of their current fitness level, and our members are great about encouraging each other.?

Katie Hunter can attest to that. Encouraged by her brother, who was already a member, she first walked though the Albany CrossFit doors a year ago. She admits to feeling ?a little intimidated at first.? But she stuck with the program and has even done 5k and 10k races and two CrossFit competitions on her journey to a better self.

The Paleo diet was part of that journey. It consists mostly of fish, grass-fed pasture raised meats, vegetables, fruit, roots, and nuts. Grains, legumes, dairy products, salt, refined sugar, and processed oil are excluded.

CrossFit workouts focus on natural and functional movements and are different every day. Every workout is coached and the coaches scale the workouts to accommodate different ability levels. CrossFit uses barbells, kettlebells, pull up bars and many body weight movements including squats and pushups.

And it’s a bit like the TV series “Cheers”: everyone knows your name. Members strike up friendships, go out together and travel together. A few have even gotten married.

Managing Horse Pasture

Managing Horse Pasture

Article by Randall Holman

A major part of a horse’s diet is hay or pasture. A horse weighing 1000 pounds will eat about 500 pounds each month. A horse needs roughly 28 acres of non-irrigated, dryland pasture a year if that is the only source of forage. However, a pasture that is irrigated will grow more forage than dryland pasture, requiring less acreage. The amount of irrigated pasture needed for one horse is roughly 1 to 2 acres. Two acres of pasture for each horse are recommended. One acre of pasture will provide adequate grazing, but requires more pasture management. Manage your pasture as you would with any crop with soil testing, fertilizing, and managing manure. Horses will not eat trampled grass or grass with manure on it. Horses will also overgraze smaller areas very quickly. Therefore, a combination of pasture and small lot or barn is needed to help minimize overgrazing.Do not let horses overgraze the pasture as this can cause grass to no longer grow. Keep pasture grass healthy–overgrazed pasture may never recover. To allow for re-growth, leave about 1/3 of the grass uneaten at any given time. The horse can be confined to the lot or barn and only allowed to graze for a few hours a day, reducing damage to a small pasture. Rotational pasture lots are one key to using small acreage pasture space to the fullest potential. Portable electric fencing provides an efficient and economic way to partition you pasture. Over-supplementing your horse with hay and grain will not prevent your horse from overgrazing.Pasture grazing is not absolutely necessary for a horse. A nice green pasture is not always a reality. Horses can be properly fed without pasture. However, pasture has several advantages as it is the natural feed for horses, reduces the cost of feeding, provides your horse with exercise, and generally speaking, horses are usually healthier when kept outside on pasture. Establishing and maintaining a productive pasture is not too difficult. A few dollars spent on soil nutrients for your pasture is a good investment. Fertilizer will help your pasture to become more productive and produce more forage. Fertilizer costs will generally be offset from good pasture rotating and from savings in feed costs for hay and grain supplements. Mowing is also important of pasture management. It minimizes the spread of weeds to help maintain higher quality forage. Mowing weeds before seed heads are produced limits the spread of weeds. Grass should be mowed to 3-4 inches. No matter how well you manage your pasture, it will most likely thin. To help ensure pasture continues to produce good grass, new forage seed should be spread every year. It is recommended re-seeding be done in the spring or fall. In the spring, wet conditions will allow for germination and growth, but only if it is not too wet or muddy. In the fall, there will be less competition from weeds. Grazing should not be allowed on new grass seedlings for approximately 6 to 8 weeks after emerging from the ground to allow for proper root growth.Caution! Turning your horse out on green lush pasture before conditioning him to a change in diet is dangerous and can result in sickness or possibly death. Start your horse out slowly by letting him graze for few minutes each day and gradually increase to a few hours each day.
